PART XI

A long time ago, 

Black Ladies used to tell me about Heaven. 

If their hope is justified, 

I will stand some day 

In the Halls of Paradise.

I believe there will be a door there, 

Next to a Kitchen where no work is done.

But a million Ladies sit in sweet rest. 

I think I would like to stand by that door

And listen

And look into the face of God

Standing nearby

And smiling at His Creation – 

Black Ladies Laughing in the Kitchen.
